CHANGE OF PLANS

Hi Everyone,
Sorry I haven't posted in a while, but I have a very legitimate reason. I'm in hospital in Florida with Dengue Fever. This wasn't a part of the Plan!
I'll keep in touch with the progress of my project, once I've recovered.
Thanks everyone for all your support so far.

Medicine Sans Fronteirs Cholera Clinic, PAP.

This elderly woman has been treated effectively and is in the last monitoring stage before being discharged.

Each bed has a central hole in it with a bucket placed underneath to capture the constant waste.

A doctor and a nurse discuss a patients needs while a visiting relative looks on.

Staff wash and sanitize the bedsheets and patient clothing.

Photographs from the Main Medicine Sans Fronteirs Cholera Clinic on Truman Boulevard, Port Au Prince. The treatment center was truly amazing. MSF do such an incredible job all over the world, and entering one of their facilities, you can see why they have such a great reputation. I stepped from the mayhem of the streets to a place where there is absolute order, respect and vigilant cleanliness and sanitation. They have done a brilliant job co-ordinating a response to this health crisis, and now almost 98% of patients seen are cured, and sent home with information on how to practice proper sanitation. Unfortunately because of the political upheaval and road blockades, many people in need were not able to make their way to the clinics, a critical problem as Cholera can kill within a few hours if not treated effectively. The clinic I visited continued to receive patients because of it's central location.

Recent work covering the political protests in Port Au Prince

Avid supported of Michelle Martelly (or Sweet Micky, a celebrity singer and comedian) at a political manifestation near Cite Soleil. Sweet Micky was supposedly the real second candidate and he is the most popular among the people of Port Au Prince. Rene Preval chose the 9 board member who announce the final count and it's believed that they placed Celestin - their party candidate in the top two over sweet Mickey despite clear indications during polling that Sweet Micky is one of the most popular candidates and Celestin is hugely unpopular.

Manifestation in Cite Soleil

Citizens of Cite Soleil show their support for Jude Celestin

A young child runs away with a bunch of Jude Celestin Posters in the streets of Cite Soleil.

In Cite Soleil, the poorest and most dangerous slum in Port Au Prince the people are supporting Celestin because he has never interfered in their community, voting for him represents the status quo. Celestin has manipulated this to his advantage, using their support as a threat again the rest of the people of Port au Prince, asserting that if he is not elected, the Cite Soleil residents will run riot in the street and start an all out civil war. A fairly far fetched claim that cleverly utilizes fear mongering to his benefit.

First Days In Haiti

So my first days in Haiti have actually been highly political, with protests and manifestations against the rigged election results called Tuesday, placing Jude Celestin in the the top two candidates. Celestin is the predecessor for the Rene Preval and the current ruling party and people are very disgruntled about the poor management off the Jan 12 earthquake crisis under this government. So despite my intentions to not cover daily news, I have been asked by my Agency in Europe to distribute to them, and I have been shooting the political unrest in the streets. It's also become clear to me, that this is an integral part of Haitian culture and it needs to be included in my story. So here are somepics of burning tyres and civil unrest........Of course the things I said I wouldn't do!
